Sigma Pure GPS Highlights

What are the big features of the Sigma Pure GPS? You can start cycling especially fast with the bike computer and you don’t have to connect any external sensors. The necessary sensors are already installed:

✅ GPS for speed and distance
✅ Barometer for height measurement
✅ The display of the basic bike values such as speed, distance, duration and many more is self-evident

There is no need to mount and connect external sensors. A truly pure experience 😉 the Sigma Pure GPS is ANT + nor Bluetooth. Therefore you cannot connect external sensors like cadence sensors afterwards. For the target group, beginners and hobby riders, this should not be an issue. But the Sigma Pure GPS convinces with other qualities:

✅ Altitude measurement by barometer, i.e. by air pressure
✅ Speed display via GPS (no additional sensor installation required)
✅ Route travelled can be recorded
✅ Integration of online sports portals such as Strava
✅ More than 100 hours of activities are stored
✅ Temperature display
✅ Compass navigation: route without map is displayed
✅ Display illumination
✅ Smartphone connection via NFC

The Sigma Pure GPS scores with easy mounting and intuitive operation. Even beginners find their way around immediately, the range of functions is just right for the target group and the price is really reasonable. However, external sensors cannot be connected to the Pure GPS. If you need precise performance data, you can, for example, use a bike computer from the ROX series. If you need sensors on your bike computer, you can use the Sigma ROX series, for example. Sensors can be connected there.

I really appreciated that Sigma included a Garmin Edge compatible mount. For us this will make it easier to change navi manufacturers. If you already have a collection of GPS bike navigation devices, you can now easily change them.

The second bracket included is best mounted on the second bike.

Mounting and attachment of the Sigma Pure GPS

The bracket is easily mounted directly to the stem or handlebars with the included cable ties. With a simple turning movement, the Sigma bike computer is then attached to the holder or removed again. This is fast and works absolutely reliable.

Once the mount is fastened, it holds tight: Even on rough mountain bike descents, the mount and the attached bike computer remain securely attached to the bike.

The attachment of the bracket with cable ties makes the change between different bikes not very easy. Fortunately, two brackets are already included, so the second wheel can also be equipped with a bracket. If you need even more brackets, you can find additional brackets at a reasonable price online.

Setup – Sigma Pure GPS Experience

The Sigma bike computer comes with an easy-to-understand manual. In most cases, you can get started right away without the manual because the Sigma Pure GPS is easy to use.

Nevertheless, here are some tips:

  • Connect the Sigma cycling computer to your computer or Mac with the supplied micro USB cable and start the Sigma Data Center.
  • The software simply updates the latest firmware.
  • In addition, current AGPS data can be transferred to the Sigma Pure GPS. This allows the bike computer to determine the current position faster via GPS while cycling.
  • The basic settings such as units, language, date, etc. can also be conveniently set via the Data Center. Of course, these settings can also be made on the Sigma Pure GPS itself.

Now you’re ready to go. With other bike computers, you have to set the wheel circumference or put on different bikes. The Sigma Pure GPS determines all values via the built-in GPS and the barometer. Therefore, these settings are not necessary. A really simple process.

Buttons & Operation

The Sigma Pure GPS is completely controlled by three buttons. These are located directly under the display and are always easily accessible there. The pressure point is firm and thus you can always operate the Sigma bike computer well. The control is therefore also possible with thick winter gloves.

Sigma Pure GPS experience: The operation is easily learned and works similarly to the Sigma bike computer BC 23.16 STS. The complete bike computer is operated with three buttons:

  • Left button: Switch between altitude meter indications. If you keep the left button pressed for a long time, your current altitude will be calibrated.
  • Middle button: Press to start and stop the tour. By holding down the middle button for a long time, you can access the settings menu.
  • Right button: Press the right button to access typical bike data such as speed and duration of the tour. Save your tour by holding down the right button for a long time.

Sigma Pure GPS display

The large display of the Pure GPS has a monochrome display and the contrast is excellent. You can adjust the contrast in the settings in three stages to suit your needs. All functions are shown on the display in the right size and are easy to read – even directly in the sun or when driving on bumpy ground. Then it is more advisable to look ahead than at the Sigma bike computer anyway 😉

A backlight is also built in which is very practical: This allows you to read the bike computer even in the dark.

The display is divided into three sections:

  • Status bar: Battery indicator and time are displayed here.
  • Upper half: This is always the speed displayed.
  • Lower half: Many different values can be displayed in this area. By pressing the left and right buttons, you can toggle through the displayed values. For example, basic data such as distance travelled, average speed and elapsed time can be displayed. Other functions include the display of altitude data such as a route profile, the current gradient in % and the maximum altitude of a route profile.

The functions of the Sigma Pure GPS

While riding, the Sigma Pure GPS can display the following functions:

  • Compass navigation
  • Speed: Current, average and maximum speed
  • Altitude: display of altitude profile, current altitude, gradient in %, altitude meters uphill, maximum altitude
  • Route
  • Travel time
  • Time
  • Temperature
  • Calorie consumption

External sensors cannot be connected to the Sigma Pure GPS and therefore no cadence or heart rate measurement is possible. Some bike computers of the Sigma ROX series can connect external sensors. I have already tested the Sigma ROX 12.0 for you in detail. The smaller Sigma BC 23.16 STS can also connect external sensors, but does not have GPS.

In my Sigma Pure GPS test I used the GPS bike computer on my gravel bike and also on my cyclocross. Accordingly, I was often on rough forest trails.

A typical and at the same time challenging scenario for a cycling computer, because the treetops can make GPS reception difficult. However, good bike computers can also cope with this. So how does the Sigma Pure GPS perform in these conditions?

Sigma Pure GPS bike computer in the forest
Sigma bike computer Pure GPS in the forest – The Sigma bike computer comes through almost everywhere 🙂

If you have transferred the current AGPS data with the Sigma Data Center, the current GPS position will be found within seconds. Without the initial setup with the Sigma Data Center, the Pure GPS takes quite a long time to determine the current position via GPS (GPS Fix).

As soon as the satellite reception is established, the display informs about speed, distance etc.. The satellite reliability of the Sigma Pure GPS is very good: Even with deep canyons, cloudy skies and dense treetops, the Sigma bike computer handles safely. If you ride through a tunnel, the satellite reception will of course be lost for a short time – as with any bike computer with GPS and without external sensors.

Compass Navigation: Does the Pure GPS also do bike navigation? With the Pure GPS a compass navigation is on board. An arrow points in the rough direction of the target. The distance and direction of the target was previously determined via app. A full-fledged bicycle navigation with map display is not mastered by the Pure GPS. For complex navigation, the compass navigation is not sufficient. Directly on the Pure GPS you can also display the distance and direction to the starting point – without using your smartphone. I find this function quite practical.

Battery life

Sigma states the battery life of the Pure GPS at 15 hours. My Sigma Pure GPS experience in practice: The GPS bike computer comes to a good 13 hours runtime. For most cyclists, this should be more than sufficient.

Sigma Sport Pure GPS Test USB charging port
Sigma Sport Pure GPS Test USB charging port

The battery indicator on the display shows three bars: Do not be confused if the battery is shown completely empty on the display: The Sigma Pure GPS will still run for about 2 1/2 hours.

Data evaluation

Completed activities can be viewed directly on the Sigma Pure GPS. However, only general basic values are then displayed here. The Sigma Link app for Android and iOS is available for comprehensive data evaluation.

In the app, activities can be displayed on a map, for example, and altitude progressions and speed are clearly displayed as a graph. Sharing on sports platforms like Strava and TrainingPeaks is also possible. Komoot is unfortunately not supported.

I really like the Sigma apps overall and have linked them to you here:

The data transfer from the Sigma Pure GPS to the smartphone via NFC. Since NFC has a limited range, you need to keep both devices together and keep them together during data transmission. This is not quite as comfortable as the data transfer via Bluetooth but works quite well after first getting used to it. With a Micro-USB cable as well as a USB-OTG adapter the data transfer should also work. However, I have not tested this method.

On the computer, there is the Sigma Data Center application. You can download it for free on sigma-download.com. The data is transferred from the Sigma Pure GPS to the computer via micro USB cable. The range of functions of the computer applications is similar to the range of functions of the smartphone apps. My Sigma Pure GPS experiences with the apps and the application are consistently positive: The range of functions is successful.

Sigma Pure GPS Experience and Summary

Buy Sigma Pure GPS – yes or no?

The Sigma Pure GPS is the right GPS bike computer for recreational cyclists and beginners who do not need performance data.

Particularly convincing is the quick assembly and the simple operation. The Pure GPS reliably records your routes with the built-in GPS and provides information about important bike data such as speed, duration of activity and distance. The bike computer does this very well.

In addition, the display is perfectly readable even in bright sunlight and the battery life of a good 13 hours is easily sufficient for most cyclists. In the class of entry-level bike navigators and GPS bike computers, the Pure GPS is a compelling device.

Alternatives to the Sigma Pure GPS

Sigma BC 23.16 STS

The BC 23.16 STS is the flagship of the Sigma bike computers and offers almost complete functionality – only GPS is missing. Performance-oriented cyclists will be happy about the possibilities to connect sensors for cadence and heart rate. Altitude meters are also measured via the integrated altimeter. The battery lasts, because of the missing GPS, especially long: About 7200 kilometers are an announcement 🙂

Sigma ROX 11.0

The ROX series is the GPS bike navigator series from Sigma. Accordingly, the ROX 11.0 masters simple bike navigation. The display is poor in detail but the navigation works well in practice. With the Bluetooth and ANT+ wireless protocols, it is also possible to connect sensors such as cadence, heart rate and watt meters. This means that nothing stands in the way of structured bike training.
