Outdoor gas cooker test: The test results at a glance

  • MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe (test winner): The MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe is clearly the best outdoor gas stove in the test! It fires the saucepan incredibly hard and brings 300ml of water to the boil in about 1 minute! Due to the integrated windbreak, the pocket rocket is extremely weather resistant and you can cook even in strong winds. The processing, as well as the stability is excellent. The camping stove is small and light and also has convenience features such as an integrated piezo ignition.
  • SOTO Amicus (price tip): The price tip in the test field! The SOTO Amicus convinces with strong cooking performance and tiny pack size! The lightweight also has a windbreak edge on the firing head. This makes the small gas stove extremely wind resistant. The pot rests make a somewhat flimsy state when folded. Unfolded and “loaded” with the pot, the stability then convinces! The SOTO Amicus is an excellent outdoor camping stove and a clear recommendation at a low price.
  • MSR Pocket Rocket 2: with feather-light weight and minimal pack size, the cheaper MSR camping stove convinces above all. The price is significantly lower compared to the deluxe version. The Pocket Rocket 2 produces slightly less cooking power and is quite vulnerable to wind. So you have to make compromises here. For ultralight outdoor fans and minimalists, yet a reliable stove.
  • SOTO Windmaster: The Windmaster lives up to its name! The outdoor gas stove is extremely wind stable. I had it with me on a trip around Iceland and was able to cook reliably with it even in adverse conditions. Actually it convinces in all situations: small, light, strong cooking performance, extremely wind stable and the whole thing at a reasonable price. The workmanship can’t quite keep up with the test winner, and the Windmaster is about on par with the price.
  • Decathlon Forclaz Camping Stove Trek 500: The inexpensive camping stove from Decathlon scores with strong cooking performance, a large combustion head with wide heat distribution. An integrated windshield ensures weather resistance and thanks to piezo ignition, the lighter can also stay at home. The stability is not quite convincing and for an outdoor gas stove to plug on the Decathlon gas stove is quite large.

To the detailed Pocket Rocket Deluxe practical test (test & experiences)

Practice test & Experiences: With the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe MSR has succeeded in a big hit! The MSR gas stove convinces in all areas: Strong performance meets wind resistance (thanks to built-in windbreak) and the highest quality workmanship. The MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe also reliably carries heavy pots. At the same time, the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe remains pleasantly small and lightweight: with pot holder arms folded down for transport, the mini gas stove fits easily into a 750ml pot – along with a 113 gram gas cartridge, of course. The complete outdoor kitchen is thus stored in a space-saving way. 79 grams of weight may be called ultra-light. Thanks to this excellent overall performance, the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe is a clear buy.

Scope of delivery: The Pocket Rocket Deluxe and a practical carrying bag are delivered.

Stability: All around high quality and stable is the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe processed. Already with the first touch one notices the top processing immediately. Accordingly, the outdoor gas stove also holds heavy pots securely on the three pot arms.

Gas consumption & Efficiency: Also in the main discipline, the MS Pocket Rocket Deluxe shows that we are dealing with an upper-class trekking gas stove. [Lorem Ipsum: Add here]

MSR Pocket Rocket DLX Trekking Stove on Gas Cartridge

Wind susceptibility: The integrated windbreak on the burner head works quite exemplary: crosswind is reliably kept away from the burner flame and even in medium wind, the Pocket Rocket Deluxe continued to shine with strong burning power.

Convenience features like integrated piezo ignition are almost a given on such a high-quality screw-on stove. Despite the many functions, the weight of 79 grams remains in the ultra-light range

Transport: For space-saving transport, the three pot support arms are folded down. While other outdoor gas stoves are sometimes a bit wobbly, the pot arms of the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe slide down smoothly. Then, the pot arms fit snugly against the body of the MSR gas stove to allow for the smallest possible pack size. The Pocket Rocket Deluxe is slightly larger when folded than the true ultra-light and ultra-small gas stoves such as the SOTO Amicus and the MSR Pocket Rocket 2.

The MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe can still be stowed very minimally together with a 113 gram gas cartridge in a 750 ml titanium pot.

Conclusion

A fully-fledged outdoor camping stove in a small format. In addition absolutely storm-proof, stable and well made. You already notice: The MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe convinces in practice all along the line. Thanks to excellent stability, even heavy pots are carried safely.

The MSR gas cooker also impresses with its cooking performance: with strong 3260 watts (manufacturer’s specification),1 litre of water is brought to the boil in approx. 3.5 minutes. Thanks to the integrated windbreak on the burner head, cooking in windy weather is absolutely possible. A great added value for the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe. Comfort functions such as the integrated piezo igniter round off the overall package.

Transport is possible in a very compact way: The mini gas stove fits easily into a 750 ml titanium cup with the pot supports folded in – together with a 113 ml gas cartridge, of course.

To the detailed model SOTO Amicus practical test (test & experiences)

Practice Test & Experiences: The Soto Amicus features minimal weight, a small pack size and strong cooking performance. It’s amazing that SOTO still includes useful comfort features in this small gas stove, such as a windshield on the burner head and the piezo igniter. The boiling power is strong and 1 litre of water is heated within about 4 minutes. Pots find a secure hold on the pot supports. Due to the small size, the Soto Amicus is best suited for cooking 1 to 2 people with small or medium pots (tested with up to 1 liter pots) are held safely.

Soto Amicus Test Soto Cooker Title
Soto Amicus Test Soto Cooker Title

Scope of delivery: The small gas stove is supplied together with a transport bag. The small bag is practical, so that during transport neither the SOTO Amicus nor other cooking equipment scratched but not absolutely necessary.

Stability:
At first glance, the small pot supports seem somewhat delicate – in practice, the pot holder then convinces with stability. During transport, the pot arms are folded down to save space. For cooking, you fold the pot supports upwards and there they lock securely into place. At the latest now the Soto Amicus convinces and makes a safe impression! Small and medium pots are held securely. SOTO Specifies a maximum weight of 2 kilos for a pot, which would be a real heavyweight.

Soto Amicus experience outdoor stove screwed on gas cartridge
Soto Amicus experience outdoor stove screwed on gas cartridge

Gas consumption & Efficiency: For ignition at the touch of a button, a piezo ignition is installed. This works reliably and produces a spark when actuated. If YOU want to save a few grams, the SOTO Amicus is optionally available without piezo igniter. The power of the SOTO Amicus is indicated with 3260 watts. In practice, the small trekking stove can bring 1 liter of water to a boil in about 1 minute. For a mini gas stove, this is a strong performance. In operation, the SOTO Amicus is nice and quiet and uses about 3 grams of gas per minute. A typical value for a screw-on gas cooker. With a 113 gram gas cartridge, this results in a calorific value of a good half hour.

Wind resistance: Wind resistance is one of the great strengths of the SOTO Amicus. A small wind protection edge is attached to the firing head. The wind protection works very well and you can still cook properly with the SOTO Amicus even in bad weather and a lot of crosswind. There are hardly any other small gas stoves that have this function integrated as well. Many other small gas stoves without wind protection, forfeit much of the burning power in crosswinds and then consume a lot of gas.
Transport:
The Amicus can be transported in the smallest space and finds a place almost anywhere. For transport, the small pot arms are simply folded down. This works within a few seconds. Together with a 113 gram gas cartridge, the SOTO Amicus fits wonderfully in a XXX ml cup/pot.

Good

✅ Minimal weight and pack size
✅ Strong performance
✅ Draft shield integrated on the firing head
✅ Ignition at the touch of a button with piezo ignition
✅ Cheap Mini Gas Stove

Bad

❌ Suitable for pots up to approx. 1 litre volume and maximum 2 kg (manufacturer’s specification)

Conclusion – Soto Amicus

The SOTO Amicus is the almost ideal outdoor cooker when 1 to 2 people are to be cooked. The SOTO stove is small, light and has a lot of power. The integrated windbreak works exactly as it should: Wind is kept away from the flame and thus cooking is possible even in bad weather. The mini gas cooker is more stable than first expected and with pots up to approx. 1 litre volume (more I did not test) and 2 kilos weight reasonably usable.

The small gas stove is available with and without piezo ignition (recommendation: buy with piezo ignition) and the clear buy recommendation in the price-performance class.

To the detailed SOTO Windmaster field test (test & experiences)

Praxistest & Erfahrungen: The SOTO Windmaster has similar qualities as the already presented Amicus and has a lot of power: 1 liter of water is brought to a boil within about 4 minutes and thanks to the large combustion head, the heat is evenly delivered upwards. This prevents the food from burning in the middle. The Windmaster Mini gas cooker lives up to its name: there is a windbreak on the burner head and the gap between the burner head and the cooking pot is only 6 millimetres. Wind can hardly penetrate, which makes the SOTO Windmaster extremely wind-resistant. When bad weather is expected, the Windmaster is therefore a strong mini gas stove. Furthermore, the Windmaster convinces with low weight and small pack size. A piezo ignition provides for comfortable ignition. The pot support surface is very large with a span of XX cm. The pot supports can be removed for transport. This tends to make the Windmaster even more space-saving, but the removable pot support could have a negative effect on the durability.

Soto Windmaster Test - Fire between burning head and cooking pot
Soto Windmaster Test – Fire between burning head and cooking pot

Scope of supply:
Delivered is everything you need. The Soto Windmaster Outdoor gas stove and a small carrying bag. The 4-armed pot support 4Flex is included in the scope of delivery. during operation, the pot arms are securely clipped to the firing head and hold even heavy and larger pots there safely. If you want to save weight, there is the 3 arm pot support 3Flex.

Stability:
The 4-arm pot support 4Flex makes a rather delicate impression at first and could be a weak point on the SOTO stove in the long term. After all: SOTO specifies a maximum weight of XX for the pot. This will rarely be achieved in practice. In the test, the 4Flex has so far proven to be very robust and stable: thanks to the ribbed profile and a large support surface with xx cm span, even larger pots find a secure hold on the SOTO Windmaster.

Soto Windmaster Outdoor Gas Stove with Gas Cartridge
Soto Windmaster Outdoor Gas Stove with Gas Cartridge

Gas consumption & efficiency: SOTO specifies the power at 3260 watts. In practice, the SOTO Windmaster delivers excellent performance: 1 litre of water is brought to the boil in about 4 minutes. The gas consumption shows typical values: approx. 3 grams of gas are consumed per minute. With a small 113 gram gas cartridge you can therefore cook for a good half hour. With a 227 gram gas cartridge you can cook for over an hour. As I said, these are typical values that you can be satisfied with.

Wind susceptibility: Now the SOTO Windmaster plays out its great strength! It is probably the most wind resistant mini gas stove. A wind protection edge is attached to the firing head. This keeps wind away from the firing head. In addition, the combustion head has a concave design, i.e. it is offset downwards into the housing. The gap between the firing head and the pot is also only a small 7 millimetres. All in all, these measures work quite well and with the Windmaster you can still cook efficiently even in windy weather. An extra windbreak is not necessary.

Transport: For space-saving transport, the pot support arms (4Flex or 3Flex) are removed from the SOTO Windmaster. Windmaster, the pot arms and a 113 gram gas cartridge can then be stowed in a XXX cup for easy transport.

Soto Windmaster Test Soto Stove Title
Soto Windmaster Test Soto Stove Title

Good

✅ Small and light
✅ Extremely wind-resistant thanks to integrated windbreak
✅ convenient piezo igniter integrated
✅ Quiet in operation
✅ A lot of power

Bad

❌ High price
❌ Removable pot holder (4Flex or 3Flex) possible weak point for long-term travellers

Conclusion

The Soto Windmaster is made for outdoor tours in wind and weather: The mini outdoor gas stove is screwed directly onto the gas cartridge. It only weighs 86 grams (weighed by ourselves). together with a 100ml gas cartridge the Soto Windmaster fits easily into a 1L cooking pot. There is even plenty of room for other cooking utensils.

The integrated windscreen, as well as other clever design decisions, make the Soto Windmaster particularly resistant to wind. An extra windbreak is therefore superfluous with the Soto Windmaster. As a further extra, the Soto Windmaster offers piezo ignition and extra large pot arms that can be removed for transport.

I bought the Soto Windmaster especially for a circumnavigation of Iceland. On Iceland, the Windmaster defied bad weather and I could always prepare a warm meal or boil water.

How is wind resistance achieved? With the integrated windbreak: The edge of the Soto Windmaster is pulled up slightly: This integrated windbreak reliably blocks crosswinds. In addition, the heating surface has a concave design. The heating surface is offset downwards, which makes it even more difficult for wind to reach the flame. The gap between the flame is only a few millimetres large: as the pot sits almost directly on the flame, there is hardly any surface for the wind to attack.

The cooking pot is particularly stable on the 4-arm pot holder. The arms can be removed for transport.

To the detailed MSR Pocket Rocket 2 field test (test & experiences)

Practical test & Experiences: The MSR Pocket Rocket 2 belongs to the genre of the smallest mini gas stoves – a smaller outdoor kitchen can hardly be assembled. For cooking or heating water in good weather, the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 is also highly recommended: 1 litre of water is brought to the boil in about 5 minutes. However, the operating noise is relatively loud, so that the cooker can be perceived as annoying during a conversation. The MSR Pocket Rocket 2 weighs only 75 grams and can be transported very space-saving in a XXX cup together with a gas cartridge. In good weather the mini gas stove is worth a recommendation – in windy weather it loses a lot of cooking power. For bad weather you should take a windbreak with you or go straight for the big brother, the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe with built-in windbreak.

MSR Pocket Rocket 2 Test MSR Gas Stove Title
MSR Pocket Rocket 2 Test MSR Gas Stove Title

Scope of delivery: The Pocket Rocket 2 trekking stove and a small transport bag are included. The transport bag is practical during transport so that the small gas cooker or other cooking accessories are not scratched. If you want to save even more space, you can also leave out the transport bag.

Stability: As the manufacturer has already done with other trekking stoves, the workmanship is quite outstanding. Nothing wobbles here and MSR specifies a maximum load of 3.6 kilos, which is already enormous! Small and medium pots are held securely on the pot arms by the MSR Pocket Rocket 2. On a mini gas stove like the Pocket Rocket 2, cooking pots of 1 litre or less are usually used due to the high centre of gravity. So you don’t have to worry about the weight.

MSR Pocket Rocket 2 MSR Gas Stove Test Gas Burner Outdoor
MSR Pocket Rocket 2 MSR Gas Stove Test Gas Burner Outdoor

Gas consumption & Efficiency: In the core discipline, the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 shows solid results and does not completely convince. The gas consumption is about 3 grams of gas per minute. This is a typical value and almost every good gas stove is on par here. Due to the small combustion head, the energy is emitted centrally. When boiling water, that’s perfectly fine too. Food can therefore burn more easily in the middle. To bring one litre of water to the boil takes about 5 minutes to about 5 minutes and 30 seconds. Other trekking stoves are faster here.

Wind susceptibility: The small gas stove has a wind bar installed in the middle of the burner head. As a result, the flame is not completely blown out even in strong crosswinds. However, this footbridge does not completely keep the wind out. The cooking efficiency suffers a lot due to the wind and the cooking time increases accordingly. Therefore, the Pocket Rocket cannot be called windproof. In bad weather and wind, you should therefore look for a wind-protected area, or put an extra windbreak on the packing list.

Transport: The three pot support arms are simply folded down for transport. Then the trekking stove has a mini pack size and fits together with a 113 gram gas cartridge in a XXX cup.

MSR Pocket Rocket 2 Consumption Ultralight Stove
MSR Pocket Rocket 2 Consumption Ultralight Stove

Good

Very small and lightweight mini gas stove
✅ Good cooking performance in calm conditions
✅ Very stable
✅ High quality processed
✅ Cheap

Bad

❌ Loud operating noise
❌ susceptible to wind

Conclusion

The Pocket Rocket 2 is mainly characterized by its low weight and small pack size. With these values it is one of the smallest and lightest gas cookers. The MSR Pocket Rocket 2 lets you put together a truly minimalist outdoor kitchen. In addition, the workmanship and stability is excellent.

If bad weather with wind is expected, the Pocket Rocket 2 will lose some of its cooking power and you will have to find a sheltered area. If you’re mainly out and about in good weather, the Pocket Rocket 2 cooks with good performance.

Outdoor gas cooker – what you should consider

Find out in the following what is important for a good outdoor gas stove and where the differences are.

That’s what matters

Burn gas almost without residue and thus safely prepare a hot meal. These are the basic requirements for a mini gas cooker. Almost all gas cookers also meet this requirement with flying colours. Most gas stoves are very reliable. In addition, no or hardly any maintenance is required. The ideal companion for long bike trips or hikes.

What use do you have for your trekking stove?

Intended use:

  • Number of people: How viele people are you planning to cook for and how big are your pots? If you are using an ultra-light and compact titanium pot, then a mini camping stove is ideal. If two or more people are being cooked for, a camping stove with a larger surface area tends to be necessary.
  • Season: In which season do you want to use the camping stove? Camping stoves with a heating loop work more efficiently in cold temperatures than camping stoves without a heating loop.
  • Size and weight: Should it be an ultralight mini camping stove in lightweight construction and with the essential reduced range of functions? Or is the comfort of a camping stove with gas inlet more important and you accept a little more weight and a bigger stove?
  • Loudness: Some trekking stoves are whisper quiet. Others disturb conversations in the surrounding area with their noise. You can find out more about the volume development in the individual tests.
  • Additional features:Additional features include an integrated windscreen to increase efficiency and a built-in windscreen. For each camping stove in the test, it is indicated whether additional functions are available or not.

What types of outdoor gas stoves are there?

Basically, you can distinguish between two types of outdoor gas stoves: the mini screw-on stoves and the outdoor gas stoves with flexible fuel supply line. The features of these outdoor stove types differ significantly. The system cookers are a subcategory of the mini screw-on cookers. We will also look at this category in detail: You can find out more about the features of these cooker types now.

There are particularly large differences in: size of the cooker, weight and in stability. The number of people to be cooked can also influence the cooker choice.

Mini screw-on cooker

Mini screw-on stoves: These gas stoves are the smallest and lightest gas stoves and are simply screwed onto the top of a standard gas cartridge. The tops are then placed on top of the gas cooker. Particularly lightweight models weigh clearly less than 50 grams. Thanks to their small size, these gas stoves are particularly appropriate for ultralight activities such as bikepacking and ultralight trekking or hiking.

Cookers of this type have easily enough power to fire a pot for several people. However, the contact surface on the stove is quite small and the centre of gravity is comparatively high. Therefore, stoves of this type are best suited for one person – if a pot with a small diameter is used or if it should be ultra-light, two people can also be cooked.

For more stability, the use of a gas cartridge stand is recommended. This stand is clamped under a standard gas cartridge. The stand offers a larger contact surface and thus a much better hold.

  • Recommendation: Gas cartridge stand*.

System cooker

System cookers: A special form with the mini screw-on cookers are the so-called system cookers: gas cooker, cooking pot and accessories are best integrated with each other. Thus, these cookers are particularly simple and practical in transport. All necessary parts for the outdoor kitchen are supplied directly. The individual components work best with the original accessories supplied. In total, these system stoves are often somewhat heavier and larger than ultralight slip-on gas stoves in combination with ultralight pots. For normal hiking, cycling and trekking, these system stoves are well suited and a practical solution thanks to the high level of integration. The best known system stove probably comes from the manufacturer Jetboil. The US company launched the Jetboil Flash, the first system stove. Meanwhile, the Jetboil series has been expanded. Other well-known companies also have system cookers in their range: including MSR and Optimus and even Decathlon offers its own model. I will introduce you to interesting system cookers below, including all their advantages and disadvantages.

Outdoor gas cookers with flexible fuel supply line

Outdoor gas stoves with flexible fuel supply line: these gas stoves have a fixed stand and are connected to the gas cartridge via a supply line a flexible supply line. The support surface from the gas stove is larger than the slip-on version. They are also close to the ground. What is the focus deeper. Because of the deep center of gravity they have a high stability. The large bearing surface ensures extra stability. With these features, the outdoor gas stoves with flexible fuel supply line are especially suitable for cooking with large pots and even pans. If you regularly cook for two or more people, this type of outdoor gas stove is suitable.

The weight is slightly higher than mini slip-on gas stoves and these stoves are slightly larger. Combined with a 100 ml gas cartridge, compact models can still be tucked into a 1 liter cooking pot.

The right choice is an outdoor gas stove with flexible fuel supply line if:

  • More convenience in cooking is necessary
  • Two or more people are to be cooked for and you use correspondingly large pots and pans
  • you are on the road for a particularly long time, e.g. on a road trip

Types of travel where an outdoor gas stove with flexible fuel supply is suitable: Bike trips, hiking and trekking, road trip.

Gas cartridge – which is the right one for the trekking stove?

What do you need to consider when choosing the right gas cartridge for your outdoor gas stove? Basically, the thread of the outdoor gas stove is standardized. You can therefore combine gas cartridges and trekking stoves from different manufacturers.

You should know the following aspects about gas cartridges:

  • Size and weight
  • Connections:
  • Gas mixture:
  • Temperature and altitude:
  • Availability:

Link: Adapter
Contents: propane, isobutane and butane – inside there is a high pressure
As a result, the mixture inside the gas cartridge is liquid
At the following temperatures the mixtures become gaseous again:

  • Butane: approx. 1 degree C
  • Isobutane: approx. 12 degrees C
  • propane: approx. 42 degrees C

The higher the temperature at which the substance changes from a liquid to a gaseous state, the higher the pressure required for storage. Propane must therefore be stored at the highest pressure. Butane must be stored at the lowest pressure.

For operation at cold temperatures, a high propane content is therefore most advantageous. The distribution of the gas mixture is printed on the outside of the gas cartridge. From most manufacturers e.g. from MSR and Optimus, there are gas cartridges with suitability for different temperatures.

The gas cartridges for cold outdoor tours are usually called “Winter Gas” or “All Season” gas cartridges. Choose a gas cartridge like this, for bikepacking trips, bike tours, and other outdoor adventures when the camping stove will be operating below 10 degrees.

Two tips for burning efficiently with an outdoor gas stove at low temperatures:

Turn the gas cartridge upside down or sideways: This is possible with gas cookers with flexible supply line. This means that residual gas in the gas cartridge can also be burned efficiently and without residue. Some gas stoves with a flexible supply line have special holders for the gas cartridge. This is used to hold the cartridge sideways or upside down.

Integrated heating loop or carburetor: Gas stoves with flexible supply line have a built-in heating loop. Once the stove is at operating temperature, the gas in the heating loop is heated. This ensures reliable operation even at low temperatures. A stove with an integrated heating loop is, for example, the Primus Express Spider 2*. The OPTIMUS Vega gas stove has a so-called 4-season mode: the stove can burn both gaseous and liquid fuels. Use at low temperatures is therefore possible.
