It weighs in at a light 79 grams. The three arms of the pot supports can be easily folded in for transport. With its compact dimensions, the Pocket Rocket Deluxe together with a gas cartridge fits easily into a 1 litre pot.

Field test

The gas cooker is simply screwed onto a standard gas cartridge. Thanks to increasing tourism, gas cartridges are now available in many countries: in Germany in DIY stores and in other countries often directly at the gas station.

How to use the MSR gas stove:

• Make sure that the gas tap is closed. To do this, turn the gas tap fully to the right.
• Screw Pocket Rocket Deluxe tightly onto the gas cartridge

• Now slowly turn on the gas tap

Press the aluminium button of the piezo ignition. The resulting spark now ignites the flame.

A piezo ignition must not get wet, otherwise it will not work. Having this ignition on the stove is a great luxury and makes it easier to use. As a precaution, I would pack a small lighter or matches in your camping cooking kit.

To increase the reliability of the piezo ignition, the lead has been routed inwards and the pushbutton for ignition is made entirely of metal. On other models the pressure switch is partly made of plastic. Here was definitely thought with.

Stability

Immediately upon opening, one notices the stability of the pot rest: The arms themselves are relatively thick and thus very robust. Also the folding mechanism seems reliable and made for many years of outdoor cooking fun.

No wobbling, can bob and thanks to the jagged profile also no slipping. Really exemplary!

In practice I have cooked with pots up to 1 liter volume and the stability was excellent.

Gas consumption & Efficiency

MSR states the power rating at a full 3260 watts. What does this mean in practice? In just approximately 3.5 minutes, an entire liter of water is brought to a boil. Accordingly, you need about one minute of cooking time for about 300 ml.

So the Pocket Rocket Deluxe has plenty of power and will get your meal cooking fast. For a slip-on gas stove, the burner head is very large, which is good for heat distribution on the pot. With dishes such as fried eggs, of course, you have to be careful that they do not burn, but basically the heat distribution is exemplary.

How long does a gas cartridge last? MSR quotes a burn time of 60 minutes for a 227 gram gas cartridge. Typically, I have noticed a consumption of about 3 grams of gas for one minute of burn time. This is a typical value for an outdoor gas stove and is within the MSR manufacturer’s specifications.

Wind susceptibility

When there is no wind, the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe unleashes its full power. What is the situation with wind?

Many outdoor gas stoves lose most of their cooking energy in crosswinds. The cooking process then takes considerably longer and a relatively large amount of gas is consumed. To ensure effective wind protection, an extra windbreak is required. This is at least large sometimes also heavy and you have to build it separately.

MSR has solved the wind issue with the Pocket Rocket Deluxe very well and integrated a windbreak: At the top of the burner head is a small edge. This blocks the wind. This works quite well in practice and you can still cook well with the MSR Pocket Rocket deluxe even in changeable weather and strong crosswinds. In situations where other gas stoves almost stop cooking, the pocket rocket hardly loses any energy.

• The firing head is also recessed slightly downwards into the housing, so that wind has even less of an attack surface here.
• The gap between the firing head and the pot is relatively small.

MSR comes with a built-in pressure regulator in the Pocket Rocket Deluxe. As a result, low temperatures and an almost empty gas cartridge should have less of an impact on the gas stove. In these conditions, gas stoves without special mechanisms burn unreliably.

I haven’t tried it at very low temperatures yet. With low throttle, the Pocket Rocket Deluxe still burns very reliably. More reliable than most other gas stoves.

Transport

Before repacking and transporting the mini gas cooker, it must be allowed to cool down. Anyway, after cooking you are busy with eating or cleaning the cookware.

After a few minutes, the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe is cooled down and you can pack it away. For easy transport and to avoid scratching cookware or other equipment, a small pack sack is included.

With its small dimensions, the outdoor gas stove fits easily into a 1 liter cooking pot. Of course together with a 100 ml gas cartridge.

The Pocket Rocket 2 heats rather selectively and centrally. This is not a problem with water, but food can burn quite quickly. Thanks to the larger combustion head, the Pocket Rocket Deluxe distributes the heat much more evenly over the surface of the pot. The Pocket Rocket Deluxe is a small and lightweight outdoor gas stove with additional features that mean a big comfort gain in practice. The workmanship is high quality all around and should be so. Thus, the Pocket Rocket Deluxe should guarantee many years of outdoor cooking fun.

Thanks to the integrated piezo ignition, the flame is conveniently and quickly ignited at the touch of a button.

The three pot holder arms hold even heavier pots and pans very reliably and securely in place.

Also the cooking performance convinces the MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe heats up properly and thus 300 ml of water are brought to a boil in about one minute.

The MSR Pocket Rocket 2 has a tiny pack size and is very light. In good weather it brings the meal or water to the boil very quickly but in bad weather and wind it loses a lot of energy.
